What Is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that most often forms in deep veins of one’s leg(s). Once a clot forms, it is at high risk of breaking off and traveling though the bloodstream at which point it becomes a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). If a PE travels to one’s lung, it can block blood flow ultimately causing serious injury or even death.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is considered a serious risk during surgery, but can be prevented through the use of mechanical prophylaxis.

According to the Surgeon General

“The best estimates indicate that 350,000 to 600,000 Americans each year suffer from DVT and PE, and that at least 100,000 deaths may be directly or indirectly related to these diseases. This is far too many, since many of these deaths can be avoided.” 1

According to G Lippi, from the study “Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism: Focus on Mechanical Prophylaxis:”

“the risk of VTE was reduced by 50% when mechanical compression was combined with a pharmacological approach. 2”

Patient Info

Surgeries over 45 minutes long are known to increase a patient’s chances of developing a dangerous DVT , commonly referred to as a blood clot. MedVantage works with surgery centers around the country to ensure that every patient has access to mechanical DVT prophylaxis for DVT Prevention to provide the best possible outcome for each and every surgery.

DVT Prevention

If you have surgery at one of MedVantage’s partner facilities, then you may be prescribed an Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Device for your operation. Intermittent pneumatic compression is clinically proven to reduce the risks associated with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism following surgery. This device uses an air pump and compression cuffs to mimic ambulation and accelerate venous velocity during a medical procedure. Promoting blood flow through pneumatic compression dramatically reduces the risk of DVT and PE.

Prior to your operation, you will complete and sign a MedVantage billing form that serves as an Assignment of Benefits (AOB). This release allows MedVantage and/or it's partners to bill your insurance for the equipment used during your surgery.

Your insurance company will provide you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) that details how they handled the claim. It is important to realize that an EOB is not a bill. If you have any questions about your EOB or the products provided, please contact us.
